It is the uniqueness of the Protea Hotel Mossel Bay, nestling on the Mossel Bay shoreline with the majestic Outeniqua mountains as a backdrop, that singles it out from other establishments.
Its stone walls and Mediterranean-style out-buildings belie the fact that the main building is one of the oldest in Mossel Bay and forms part of the Dias Museum Complex.
Protea Hotel Mossel Bay, situated off Santos beach, could best be described as a hotel complex. It comprises of a breakfast Patio with Sea view, swimming pool with garden, Cafe Gannet Restaurant, Mossel Bay's Seafood House, Jacana Curio Shop, Wild Mossel Bay Outdoor Adventure Centre and the Ochre Shopping Centre - "Artists@work".
This is one of the oldest recorded business premises in the Southern Cape and was built in 1846 for the purpose of a warehouse and the trading station by the wholesale firm Barry & Nephews.
In 1941 it was purchased by the Golden Ochre Company who mined ochre clay in the Albertinia district. It was then railed to Mossel Bay and milled in the factory. The ochre was exported to England and used in the manufacturing of paint.
Close to the front verandah stood a tall mast which was erected for navigational purposes for passing ships.
