Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, in the heart of Turkey. A true hikers' paradise and miracle of nature.

Ten million years ago 3 volcanos covered Cappadocia with a vast layer of soft tuff and lava. Fantastic rock formations were scraped and polished by wind and water into real works of art. You'll be breathless seeing this fairy-like landscape of hills and valleys full of strangely formed rocks and lovely pastelcolours in unspoilt nature. Hittites, Christian monks, Byzantines en Ottoman people hid themselves in these canyons by carving out houses, churches with fresco's and monasteries. They even dug out giant underground cities from the soft rock.

The landscape of Cappadocia, and especially the famous National Park of Göreme, offers hikers, nature lovers and culture seekers in every season a inexhaustable source of colour, form, nature, calm and freedom. You'll be amazed with this oasis! From Kemal's Guest House you can walk within 5 minutes to your adventures in the area. Young or old, you can explore these lush valleys and the pink, yellow and white hills. Walk through de shady gorges filled with bizarre 'fairychimneys'. Fields full of wildflowers, numerous orchards, butterflies and singing-birds. Find your way into old, freely accessible churches, monasteries and houses dug out in the rocks. Take your most beautiful pictures ever!

Enjoy your picknick with your feet in a stream. Wander through unspoilt villages where some people still live in the caves and meet the local population of farmers. Visit the famous cavechurches in the Open Air Museum of Göreme and enjoy the magnificent view from the citadel of Uchisar. Swim during a daytrip in the river of Ihlara-valley and visit one of the underground cities.

Göreme-village is fitted with all modern conveniences but has kept its authentic and cosy atmosphere. There are numerous restaurants, shops, internet-café's and bars. Public transport to and from the village is very easy. You can also rent a car, bike, motorcycle or horse. Take a balloontrip, visit a Turkish Night with folkmusic, see the famous Dancing Dervishes, go to a Turkish bath, go for a swim or just quietly read your book on our huge Ottoman couch in the garden.... anything is possible! We will gladly help you with information and maps.

Kemal's Guest House, your home away from home!

Cappadocia is a real hiker's paradise! Göreme-village is situated right in the heart of the most beautiful valleys; all valleys and gorges, each with its own specific atmosphere, are within five minutes walking-distance from our Guest House. A small selection of the many possibilities: Love Valley, where through time and erosion giant colums of rocks with pointed tops have emerged. White Valley, with its female, softly curved shapes and unexpected tunnels. Red Valley owes its name to its bizarre, almost coral-shaped forms in red, pink and yellow soft tuffstone. You'll feel as if you're walking on the bottom of the ocean, not surrounded by fish but by birds! Fairychimney Valley is famous for the huge pilar-like rocks with a stone on top that appears to fall off any minute. Devrent Valley is like a giant zoo where you can imagine all kinds of animals in the rockformations. Pigeon Valley has real Hobbithouses, lots of tunnels and holes where pigeons live and produce fertiliser for the farmers. Zemi Valley, the gorge that is perhaps the most green and lush of all, has beautiful walls of whipped cream and is inhabited by many rare birds. More valleys and gorges, off the beatten track, can be found: ask Barbara about them! The valleys and gorges are green and shady, full of fruittrees, willows, poplars; small streams provide the hiker and the varied flora & fauna, shade and water. The valleys are separated by hills with flat tops, on wich you can find easy-going dirtroads, orchards and grapevines. From these hills you'll have far and spectacular views! Everywhere, hidden in the valleys and the walls of the gorges you'll find churches, abandoned houses and old monasteries, carved from the rock. If you can find the entrances you are free to carefully explore them.In the midst of all this the local farmers produce their fruit: grape for local wine, apricot, apple, quince, pear, cherry, watermelon, Gallia. There are no fences to keep strangers out: respect their land and the farmers will respect you. It is a real garden of Eden! The animals that you encounter on your hikes are many singing-birds, like golden oreole, nightingale and blackbird, mocking bird, finch and sparrow. There are cuckoos, woodpeckers, hoopas, hawks and eagles. Besides that there are hundreds of different butterflies. The endangered landturtle lives here, and so does the small lizard, the marten and hamster. You'll even spot a fox when you're very quiet. And because the air is still very clean here (due to lack of industry & factories) the fields and valleys are abundant with wildflowers: poppy, cornflower, orchid, wild rose, thyme, mint, lathyrus, honeysucle, malva, hollyhock, lilac, dead nettle, silene, helianthemum. Fields filled with yellow, purple, red or pink flowers!
